The Borderland Museum
Kirkenes' unique history as a border town
Learn about Kirkenes' dramatic history – war, mining and life in the shadow of Russia.
The Borderland Museum tells the story of Kirkenes and Sør-Varanger, a region that has lived at the crossroads between east and west for over a hundred years. Norwegian, Sami and Russian cultures have met here.
During World War II, Kirkenes was subjected to over 300 bombing raids – more than any other Norwegian town. Visit the authentic bomb shelters where the population took refuge, and hear the stories of survival and resistance.
The museum also covers the mining operations in Bjørnevatn, Sami culture and the unique border dynamic that still shapes the region today.
