Storskog Border Crossing
Norway's only land border crossing to Russia
Visit Storskog – a unique piece of Norwegian geography where Europe meets Russia, just 15 kilometres from Kirkenes.
Storskog is Norway's only land border crossing with Russia, and one of the most distinctive destinations in all of Northern Norway. The border between Norway and Russia stretches 196 kilometres, but this is the only place you can cross it by land.
Standing at the border crossing is a powerful experience – two worlds meet here, separated by just a few metres. The sign bearing the Norwegian and Russian flags is a popular photo subject, and the geopolitical significance of the place is palpable.
Historically, Storskog was an important trading and contact point between Norwegian and Russian local communities. The border town of Kirkenes has for centuries had close ties to Russian culture and trade, and Storskog is the physical symbol of this neighbourly relationship.
Please note that border crossing for tourists is currently restricted. Storskog is still well worth a visit – the viewpoint and border area are accessible, and few places give such a direct and striking sense of where Europe ends.
